The Weimaraner

I purchased my first Weimaraner, Otto, from a breeder in 1993 and I've been hooked on them ever since! Otto was such a great dog, who brought me 13 years of joy. For most of his life, Otto was typical of Weims: active, funny and affectionate family dogs with vibrant, distinctive personalities. I adopted an 8 year-old male ("Smokey") from a rescue agency in 1998 as a companion for Otto. Although, I had never adopted before, Smokey turned out to be another wonderful dog.

Needless to say, I have been volunteering with/for the Tristate Weimaraner Rescue, Inc. since 2006. I am a Foster Mom and Intake Coordinator for New Jersey and Delaware. Although it's easy to become attached to foster dogs, I realize that my job is to help each Weim transition to a home where they can flourish and that finding a permanent home allows another dog the opportunity to be rescued. I have fostered 10 dogs (not at the same time!) over the past 2 ½ years. Of those ten, I did adopt one (Lily, a precocious 3 year-old obsessed with shoes).

I'm excited to be involved with Tristate Weimaraner Rescue because fostering helps in so many ways. The foster home provides an environment where a previously sheltered or stray dog can be evaluated to determine his/her temperament, what type of home would be best suited for him/her or how much basic training or socializing skills are needed. Fostering has been a great experience for me and my family. I have developed a sense of pride in helping these dogs. It's my way of giving back to those less fortunate. It's a shame that there remains so many dogs that need help. Although I purchased Otto from a breeder, I encourage everyone to explore the abundance of wonderful dogs, purebred and mixes, available. I will never BUY a dog again!
